Simple Perio Surgery & Gum Surgery

After a thorough examination, if it is determined that you have periodontal/ gum disease, we may recommend gum surgery, in which case we will make sure to offer you the best specialized treatment available. Below is some insight and answers to some of our most frequently asked questions.

Types of Gum Surgery

Eating a balanced diet, making regular visits to the dentist, and of course proper oral hygiene (i.e. brushing and flossing teeth twice daily using fluoride containing toothpaste) can help reduce bacterial plaque formation that can lead to gum disease.

As a last resort, there are several types of gum surgeries that may be recommended if you have developed gum disease.

Pocket reduction (also known as gingival flap surgery) is a procedure your surgeon folds back the gums and removes bacteria.

Regeneration is a procedure your surgeon folds back the gums and removes disease-causing bacteria, then inserts bone grafts, membranes, or tissue-stimulating proteins (or any combination of the three) to encourage your gum tissues to regenerate and fit snugly around the teeth again.

Crown lengthening is a type of Periodontal (gum and/or bone) surgery that can esthetically correct a gummy smile or create a more ideal environment for a tooth receiving a crown.

Soft Tissue Graft is a procedure where your surgeon takes a sample tissue from elsewhere in your mouth and attaches it to your gums to replace gum tissue that has receded or has been removed due to gum disease.

Why Shouldn't I just Wait Until I'm in Serious Pain?

Most people may not experience severe pain with gum disease(periodontitis), especially during the early stages. However, if left untreated, gum disease(periodontitis) can cause tooth loss, and even destruction of your underlying jawbone. In advanced stages of gum disease(periodontitis), you may experience severe pain while chewing, severe bad breath, and a foul taste in your mouth. Pain in gums can also be a sign of oral fungal infection, such as thrush, and even the onset of gingivitis.
